Weather and Activity Level in the Dolomites

Weather
The weather in the Dolomites usually has an element of unpredictability. In summer you can expect typical summer weather with blazing hot sun and breezes through the woods with a cool respite. There is always the possibility of rainy, cooler weather, storms with poor visibility and even snowfalls in high altitudes. For this reason you should always be prepared for sudden changes in weather. In autumn with a little bit of luck you can have crisp clear days with excellent visibility. The days in this period become shorter, so you should include this in the organization of the treks. In September daytime temperatures can reach into the upper 60s and low 70s, but early mornings will be cooler (upper 50s, low 60s). At this time of the year, rainy days at lower elevations mean snow on higher elevations. Rainstorms can drop the temperature 15° to 20° Fahrenheit. You should bring raingear jacket and pants (pants optional) with you every day, regardless of the weather conditions when you leave your hotel in the morning.

Activity level
All trips can be adapted to your demands as they are for you. Usually most hikes in the Dolomites are about 4-7 hours in length and are moderate in nature. Mountain terrain means "uneven". You are usually going up or down with ascents and descents of about 2,000 feet. Depending on the time of year you decide to come you may cross patches of snow. Rain is always a possibility in the mountains. If you are based at a comfortable inn each night, you hike with only a daypack containing the essentials you need on the trail: water bottle, camera, light jacket, and rain gear (there’s always a possibility of rain in the mountains). If you are hiking from rifugio to rifugio your pack will be a bit heavier as you will need to take some extra t-shirts, under wear and personal belongings (tooth brush, etc). Lunches are taken in one of the rifugios along the trail or you'll take a pack lunch when necessary. Please note that in every trek/information sheet there is the link for the trip rating. This trip rating will help you to choose the right trip for you.
